Helen and Natalie speak at the British HIV Association national conference in Brighton

Our directors Helen Prosser and Natalie Gamble were delighted to address the British HIV Association national conference in Brighton on 24 April 2025.
We were asked to come and speak in light of the October 2024 law change, which has enabled parents living with HIV who have an undetectable viral load (and so cannot transmit the HIV virus to anyone else) to be able to access safe fertility treatment for surrogacy in the UK. It was a full circle moment, as Natalie’s talk to the BHIVA conference in 2018 prompted the campaign run by BHIVA and the National AIDS Trust which brought about the law change. It was lovely to be back with more positive things to say about the options available to intended parents living with HIV who need the help of a surrogate, many of whom are gay men.
Natalie spoke about the law (including what had shifted, and the remaining problems experienced by all parents who need the help of a surrogate to carry their child, and what is happening with UK law reform), and Helen spoke about how the Brilliant Beginnings team has got up to speed with the changes, and the positive response we have had from the women we support as surrogates.
Many thanks to the conference for inviting us, and to BHIVA for the support they have given us with training and more.
