BB in the media: the iPaper story on single dads building families through surrogacy

Today’s iPaper features a long-read piece about single dads building families through surrogacy, and we are delighted to see the stories of some of the wonderful people we have supported featured.

Neil shared his US surrogacy journey story

Dad Neil Robertson has quite a story to tell.  Initially embarking on a US surrogacy journey together with his wife Kirsty, she tragically and unexpectedly died in 2022 from cancer. Using the embryos they had created together, Neil went on to conceive his beautiful daughter Catherine in the USA.  He says: “This was me completing [Kirsty’s] life and our life as a couple. It was also opening the next chapter of my life, which oddly, meant a new little life to focus on.”  And about surrogacy in the US he says: “It’s everything from who’s in the delivery room, to who holds the baby first. You need to be really clear about these things,” says Robertson. “That’s the big perk of doing it in America. They’re decades ahead.”

Surrogate Trish explained why she chose to help a single dad

Brilliant Beginnings surrogate Trish Lapworth also tells her story.  Speaking about why she chose to help a single dad, she says: “I thought, I’d like to help a single parent like me. I would never intentionally want to be a single parent, because it is tough. For somebody to knowingly want to put themselves in that position is really brave. I thought wow, they must really want this chance.”  And though she explains some of the ups and downs of her journey, she says: “It was amazing. I want to do it again. We meet up every so often. It’s lovely watching his son growing up.”

Natalie offer her expertise on single dads and surrogacy

Our director Natalie Gamble is also quoted in the piece, saying:

“There’s much more awareness of surrogacy as an option now, and I think there’s more openness generally about same-sex marriage and different forms of families” says Natalie Gamble, a lawyer specialising in fertility and surrogacy law. “There’s a misconception and mistrust of single men in particular who want to become parents. My experience is that they’re no different than any of the other parents that we work with. The desire to be a parent, to be a father, is a very human one.”
