Natalie speaks to Australian Law Commission

Natalie was invited to speak to the Law Commission about her long experience of global surrogacy, the law in the UK and her experience with Brilliant Beginnings (and the model it provides as a non-profit surrogacy agency) and was delighted to discuss the ways in which law reform in Australia could influence practice to help ensure an ethical approach to surrogacy both domestically and internationally.
Following in the footsteps of the Law Commissions of England, Wales and Scotland, Australia is conducting its own review of surrogacy law reform. Like the UK, Australia is concerned about the numbers of parents being driven overseas for surrogacy and considering whether to review its historic restrictive laws to manage surrogacy better.
As always, we are advocates for ethical surrogacy, knowing that surrogacy arrangements can be hugely positive for all involved, but that surrogacy is a complex and sensitive process which needs to be carefully managed.
We will look forward to seeing the report once it is published, and hope that Australia will move forward with progressive law reform (and that by then the UK government will have done the same).
